This paper is designed to provide students with skills and experience in the application of resource management plans and the resource consent process under the RMA. Students are engaged in experiential learning relevant to the practice of environmental planning and management in New Zealand.

How this paper will be taught

The paper content will be delivered by a combination of block teaching and online tuition. The first week (commencing 26 June 2023) of the course will comprise intensive sessions of campus-based workshops and practical laboratories. A highlight of the course will be the contribution of local planners and resource managers as guest speakers. The following weeks will consist of online supervision of assignments related to resource consent applications and audits. The final weeks of the course will involve preparation for and participation in a mock hearing.

All components set out in the schedule below are compulsory.

The assessment is closely tied to the learning outcomes. Each assessment task correlates to tasks a practicing resource management planner would be expected to perform. The assessments and workshops are based upon documents sourced from professional practice.

The paper will be assessed as set out in the assessment schedule.

For each assignment a separate assignment document will be provided to students.

The paper is co-taught with ENVPL508.
